Super Mario Bros. Remastered (PC Port)

Developer Joe H aka JHDev2006 recently released a PC version of the original Super Mario Bros for the NES.  There’s both Windows and Linux versions available and you’ll need an original SMB ROM for it to run.  It supports HD and ultra-wide resolutions and overall looks and plays great.  Download it for free and more info below:

Overall, I thought this was a really cool port of SMB and it even came with a few versions of the game, like Lost Levels.  Your progress is saved automatically, which is a cool addition.  And USB controllers seemed to just work, with no settings requires.

There were a few things I hope the dev considers adding to future versions.  First, an option for re-mapping controller buttons would be nice.  The buttons actually auto-mapped perfectly on my controller and I wouldn’t change it anyway, but I’m sure that’s not the case for every controller out there.  Also, it’d be fun to have extra options like an auto-4:3-sized window and maybe even CRT filters, etc…although just using ShaderGlass is probably good enough for most people.

Here’s a list of features, with a screenshot of the current settings menu below, in case you’re interested:

  • Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. Special and All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros. Fully recreated from the ground up!
  • Improved physics / level design
  • Resource Packs! Fully customize how the game looks and sounds.
  • Custom Characters – Add in your own characters to use in game.
  • Fully Open Source!
