Analogue 3D Delayed Again

After promising us their FPGA-based N64 would ship by the end of this month, Analogue has just announced that the console will be delayed once again.  This time they’re claiming the ship date is “Q4”, which could mean all the way until late December.  If you’d rather just get your money back, you can contact their support for a full refund at any time before they ship.  Or just hope they deliver on time.

Look, with their history of constant delays and lack of communication, it’s easy to throw shots at Analogue for clicks.  But as someone who’s worked in companies trying to achieve similar goals as Analogue, I can tell you with certainly a lot of this is out of their control…and my experience wasn’t even during global crisis’ like we’ve been going through since 2020.  And yeah, their condescending, seemingly AI-generated tweet got under a lot of people’s skin.  But the bottom line is still that Analogue releases good products (so far!) at reasonable prices.

Plus, there’s no real competition at the moment.  The only alternative for people who want a quality solution that plugs directly into their flat-panel TV, is to use original consoles and either get a scaler or an internal HDMI mod.  While an original N64 console and a RAD2x will actually be cheaper than a the Analogue 3D, if you’re looking to output to higher resolutions like 1080p and 4K, you’ll need to spend a lot more.  If you’ve got a bunch of other classic consoles, that’s probably the best move anyway, but if you just want to play your N64, having an HDMI mod installed will probably cost more than just the Analogue 3D.

So if you’re an N64 fan that just wants an easy way to play your original carts on your flat-panel, you should probably just wait.  Or hope another company comes up with some quality competition soon…
