The Brazilian company GamesCare has just opened a mailing / interest check list, to gauge how many people are planning on buying their upcoming, FPGA-based GF1 Neptune. GamesCare IS NOT TAKING PRE-ORDERS and are simply doing an interest check to see what to expect for the consoles launch, which is still expected late this year. Price hasn’t been announced yet, but expect it to be about the same as other FPGA-based consoles that can work with original cartridges. More info below the link:

Sega’s cancelled “Neptune”, was a console that could play both Genesis and 32x cartridges, as well as work with the Sega CD. GameCare’s version will accomplish this via FPGA and it should work with all regions of Genesis/Mega Drive and 32x carts, as well as Sega Master System cartridges via an adapter and original Sega CD hardware. The console will offer HDMI as well as analog video output via a Genesis 2-style MiniDIN, so you’ll have all the original functionality, as well as digital audio and video up to 1080p. The console will also have a MicroSD slot for loading homebrew roms and even have the ability to purchase licensed games right from the console via built-in WiFi.
It’s important to note that the GF1 Neptune was NOT the one surrounded by drama – GamesCare has a great reputation selling good products and I don’t expect the GF1 to disappoint. Crowdfunding would have been the best way to get this project off the ground faster, but after all the negative press related to the other “FPGA Neptune”, they’re going to try fund it themselves to avoid any confusion. I hope this doesn’t cause delays, but it’s certainly the best way to guarantee the product is 100% real and you’re getting exactly what you pay for.
Here’s a video of the prototype running, if you’d like a teaser:
